What we say
The Vegan Society label means no animal product is used in the product, no animal testing was involved, no GMOs were used and that it was prepared in a separate area from non-vegan products.
It’s a pretty straight forward one in theory, but we struggled to find information on the verification process or what ‘cruelty’ actually means.
Label Mouse reached out to the Vegan Society and they replied “The Vegan Society is a membership run charity. Our members are responsible for directing our standards”. We take that to mean that the scheme is entirely self-verified.
With 1 in 3 ‘vegan’ products in the UK found to contain milk or egg* and the Vegan Society themselves not verifying their scheme compliance, its really not trustworthy.
What they say
Created by the Vegan Society in 1990, this label covers more than just whether it contains animal products, it also ensures no animal testing or cruelty throughout the production process.
The scheme covers a wide range of non-food products such as fashion, cosmetics and household goods. The trademark is renewed every 12 or 24 months to check nothing has changed.
